On 6 October the head of the Human Rights Center Viasna Ales Bialiatski and the lawyer Uladzimir Labkovich attended the trial, held on the lawsuit of the president of the Chechen Republic Ahmat Kadyrau for protection of his honor and dignity from the Russian human rights organization Memorial. According to Siarhei Belikau, special investigator of Homel Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the case of the murderers of ‘the arsonist of Pukhavichy’ would soon be brought before Homel Regional Court. The exact date of the proceedings will have been fixed by the end of the month.
On 25 february the court of Tsentralny district of Homel Maryna Damnenka fined members of the Belarusian Association of Journalists Zmitser Karmazin and Aleh Razhkou 20 basic units (700,000 Br, or USD 245).
Independent journalists have been called responsible for “violation of the rules of holding street rallies”, though they were just collecting information about the rally in support of the native language on February 21, Radio Svaboda informs.
Vital Myshona
On 20 February Lelchytsy district court fined Catholic priest Vital Myshona BYR 105,000 for failing to follow the rulings by the local geodetic department following the installation of a cross in the town of Lelchytsy.
The priest was accused of unauthorized installation of a Catholic cross.

On 15 December Kalinkavichy district court executor in a special letter demanded that United Civic Party activist Dzianis Rabianok pay a BYR 1,500,000 fine awarded to him by Elsk district court for ‘violations of electoral legislation’ in absentia.

On 19 December Vitsebsk Kastrychnitski borough court considered the claim lodged by human rights activist Pavel Levinau against the decision to ban a number of public events dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The hearings on the criminal case against Alexander Barazenka at Tsentralny district court came to an end. Procurator Tsikhavets demanded that the accused was sentenced to 18 months of personal restraint without direction to an open prison. Alexander Barazenka did not take the blame. Continue reading »

The unprecedented trial that is about to commence in Zhodzina is likely to turn into an ambiguous and highly complicated venture. A number of local human rights activists lodged a claim against several plainclothes policemen, who disturbed public order and violated the rights of Zhodzina residents during the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic on 23 March, 2008. The victims include journalist Dzianis Borykau and the BPF’s local office leaders Sviatlana and Aliaksei Lapitskis.
