I cannot but express my thoughts and attitudes about the very laconic and aptly remark by the known in Belarus and far beyond human rights defender, my friend, Ales Bialiatski.

His findings are absolutely accurate and indisputable!

In fact, freedom of speech, thought, information dissemination, as well as freedom of association and peaceful assembly … are only real prerequisites for the normal existence of civil society, the existence of different public stances and public dialogue in it. This free space and a public pluralism of ideas are essential for providing conditions for a meaningful choice in society.

However, a student who missed an entire academic quarter through the officials’ fault was invited by phone to return to Gymnasium № 1 to continue his Belarusian-language education…

Yes, on 9 October 2009 parents of Yanka Lapitsky (a Belarusian-speaking student of Gymnasium № 1 in Zhodzina) received another response to theirs appeal, which was sent DIRECTLY to the Minister of Education of Belarus, Mr. Radzkou.

Surprisingly, the Deputy Minister, Mr. Faryna, whose inactivity was highlighted in the appeal, responded to this parents’ address to the Minister by himself (!?). Answer from the Ministry of Education of 06.10.2009 under No. 06-1156-K-(1)-0 was signed by this official.
